Strange. Unprecedented. Scary. Disruptive. Difficult. Resilient. Uncertain. Uncharted. Challenging. Isolation. Just ten words we will all have used or heard on numerous occasions this week as the coronavirus has started to significantly impact our every-day lives.
The Weekly remains fully operational and will continue to be so throughout the crisis, albeit not from our usual headquarters. We know that the economic fall-out will be stark. Difficult decisions will need to be made. The lack of sport, theatre and social interaction will be distressing. There is no point hiding away from any of this. But let's not lose all perspective, not least as today is Mothering Sunday.
Over the course of the last week, we’ve all seen and read lots of articles, video clips, news-feeds and even memes on the pandemic. Diane Abbott calling for the BBC to stop filming Casulty and Holby City so the staff could help with the outbreak certainly raised a smile. Much of it is extremely sobering. However, some snippets are truly uplifting, and none more so than this poem by Laura Kelly Fanucci:
"When this is over, may we never again take for granted
A handshake with a stranger
Full shelves at the store
Conversations with neighbours
A crowded theatre
Friday nights out
The taste of communion
A routine check-up
The school rush each morning
Coffee with a friend
The stadium roaring
Each deep breath
A boring Tuesday
Life itself.
When this ends may we find that we have become more like the people we wanted to be, we were called to be, we hoped to be and may we stay that way — better for each other because of the worst."
Stay safe. Look after your friends and families.
