There really is no stopping that man, Ben Stokes. The 2019 BBC Sports Personality of the Year winner proved again this week that he really can do it all, with an outstanding display in Cape Town. He can certainly bat, producing a remarkable 72 runs off 47 balls in the second innings. He can certainly bowl, taking 3 late wickets at the death to polish off the South Africans' wagging tail. And he can definitely field, finishing the match with 6 catches to his name! Notwithstanding his impressive left hook (last seen in Bristol in 2018), of which The Weekly has all but forgotten, the 4-Test series, which is now very much alive, continues in Port Elizabeth this Thursday. Despite his heroics, Stokes is The Weekly’s second-most newsworthy cricketer over the last seven days. On Friday, Shane Warne auctioned off his beloved ‘baggy green’ cap, in order to raise funds for the Australian Red Cross Disaster Relief and Recover Fund. The legendary leg spinner wore the cap during each of his 145 tests, in which he took 708 wickets, the second-most of all time. Australia’s Commonwealth Bank was responsible for the winning bid of AUS $1 million, outdoing competitors in the final minute of the online auction. The Weekly has at times found it tough to get behind the Aussies, but not on this occasion. Bravo Shane!
Investment into London hotels is set to reach record levels in 2020 according to research from Savills, published on Tuesday. UK hotel transactions reached £4.64 billion in 2019, down 42% year-on-year, but 11% above the 10-year average. Forecasts now suggest that investment volumes into the London sector alone could stand at £1.5 billion by the end of Q1 2020, with several large transactions expected to complete shortly. And the development market is continuing to thrive too with project pipelines suggesting that there are 80 hotels set to open in the capital over the next 12 months - both budget and luxury. The luxury market in particular has enjoyed success in recent years with Cushman & Wakefield reporting that, in 2019, London outdid New York to become ‘the world’s most attractive city for hotel investment.’ One such hotel that is no doubt already building up a waiting list is, the Londoner in Leicester Square. Due to be finished in June it will be the world’s first ‘super boutique hotel’. Nicknamed ‘The Iceberg Hotel’, it will measure in at 30 metres tall (from pavement to rooftop) and 32 metres deep (below ground)!
If you’re a proud owner of a Ford car then statistically you’re probably all too aware of the DVLA’s Speed Awareness courses. A study this week has named Ford drivers the worst in the UK, based on the number of points on their licences. On the other hand, those behind the wheel of a Suzuki were named among the best. A survey conducted by car retailer, Peter Vardy, saw that 45% of Ford drivers in the UK have points on their licences compared to just 25% of Suzuki and Volvo users. But it's not just the type of car you drive. Allegedly, there is also a correlation between your abilities to drive safely, the colour of your car and where you live. Owners of red cars are 10% more likely to be caught speeding than white ones and staggeringly, only 20% of those surveyed in Sheffield were points-free. So, if you’re reading this in Sheffield and own a red Ford, The Weekly suggests perhaps getting the bus to work tomorrow...?
